The Maidenlane Recordings:
a Mick Taylor tribute
Long-time Mick Taylor fan Maidenlane taped a number of Mick’s gigs on the East Coast (mainly in New York City) between November 1986 - May 1993 to preserve his own memories. Around the same time Mick Taylor lived in NYC and thus did a lot of concerts there, with his own bands or as a guest artist with other great musicians.
In our first series we first published the concerts that had never been circulated in any form. By listening to the others we discovered that many of his alternative recordings were interesting too. In the second series we publish the “Maidenlane Tapes Alts” which will feature recordings that are either in better sound quality, more complete or sound differently from previous releases.
In this last series we present the result of mixes and merges which will be similar to the Frankenstein productions (of my FP-series): by “mixing” I mean that I simultaneously record the 2 sources and by “merging” I mean that I record each source on a different channel (one for the left channel and the other for the right).
Of course, we are very grateful to Maidenlane and I also would like to thank nzb for his help (his advice, judgements and expertise have been invaluable to me).
The Maidenlane FRANKENSTEIN’S VERSIONS
14th May 1992
Lone Star Roadhouse
(Mixes of sources #1&3 completed with source #2)
14th May 1992 : New York City, Lone Star Roadhouse (1st show)
Line-up: MT (gtr, voc)/Jimmie Wood (voc, harm, gtr)/Jimmy King (gtr, bvoc)/Greg Boaz (bass, bvoc)/David Salinas (dr)
Mixes of sources #1&3 completed with source #2
01 - intro & tuning (first minute from me then mix from the two other sources)
02 - Bad Mouth Mama
03 - Hoodoo Thing
04 - How It Feels
05 - You Gotta Move
06 - Shake Your Hips
07 - banter (* see below)
08 - Kind Hearted Woman Blues-Me And The Devil Blues
09 - Cairo Motel
10 - outro (solely Maidenlane recording)
Bonus: some merged parts
(left channel: source #1 – right channel: the Maidenlane recording)
11 - intro & Bad Mouth Mama
12 - Hoodoo Thing
13 - Shake Your Hips (faded out)
Two recordings were already circulating. I used the one coming from nzb (source #1) and the Maidenlane recording (source #3) to do the best combination. My version (source #2) was saturated and with noises but contains a more complete tuning and the complete banter after ‘Shake Your Hips’. So I chose to keep the 3 sources to get the best possible sound and the most complete recording.
- The banter after “Shake Your Hips’ is now complete and rebuilt this way:
From 0’00 to 0’13: source #3
From 0’13 to 0’58: source #2
From 0’58 to 1’11: source #1
From 1’11 until the end: mix of source #1 & #3
To give it a little more interest I added, as a bonus, some merged parts.
As usual the sources are edited, declicked, channels equilibrated and the speed synchronized.
As usual I used a lot the infos taken from The Mick Taylor Complete Works Database by Nico Zentgraf
