The set list changed a little bit from Tuesday's show, but Mick was still in very good form~ As mentioned in the NY gig, he played on Catfish Blues and then about 2 songs with Buddy Guy. Mick really dug in deep for a great solo for both the aforementioned song and My Time After a While.
I think though that the guitarists who seemed to win the audience's affections were Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Robert Randolph, and Buddy Guy, who all rightfully were outstanding.
Right on!!! I will say that every guitarist and/or combo that came out deserved his spot. Eric Gales was hot shit, for example. Mato from Indigenous was fairly cool, as was Doyle Bramhall II. Did they deserve as much time as they got?
I was, of course, really there for Mick Taylor, so when Mick did Catfish in CT tonight (Waterbury CT 10/20), that was indeed the highlight. Mick looked good, in his usual sports coat outfit and sunburst Les Paul, digging deep into his blues. Obviously, I am biased, but I thought Mick offered the most unique and fat sounds of the night. His number ended far too soon.
He did come out again for the meandering Buddy Guy set. I have seen Buddy a few times before and he tends to do what he did tonight: play a bunch of tunes strung together by a whole lotta yap! It is a medley of sorts, but it lacks things like a climactic sense; if you know East Coast baseball, it is like "that's just Manny being Manny." We love Buddy, he is a legend, so he gets to ramble...
So, Mick came back on while Buddy was doing his thing, and in fact there was a very cool back-and-forth guitar conversation between Buddy and Mick on lead, but it ended all too quickly. I was just about screaming for Buddy to shut the fuck up and let Mick play some guitar, for God's sake. I was really bummed that Mick exited when he did.
However, the show carried on well; as I said, all the players were good. It ended with Kenny Wayne Shepherd dueling with Robert Randolph. Now, Robert Randolph is hot shit, if you don't know him; a remarkable pedal steel player. Kenny Wayne Shepherd is a solid SRV-ish player, but his 15 seconds of fame passed years ago.
Sorry, but with legends like Robbie Krieger and Mick Taylor, whose songs and licks have lasted 40 years, right there ready and willing, why end the show with Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Robert Randolph?!?!?

The Buddy Guy Band
A fun night, but somewhat unorganized event. Sure, they moved the program along quickly, but there really
wasn't any real connection thru out. BIlly Cox & Mitch Mitchell played together on 1 &1/2 songs. Mitchell did NOT look healthy. The bulk of the the night was handled by the SRV rhythm section Double Trouble. and as you can see as the night builds it goes from Hendrix to a long set of Buddy Guy (which is great I love BUddy!) but so much for the Hendrix momentum. BUddy's set is mostly slow blues numbers & the x-rated blues. And then the night closes with Randolph & Shepherd dueling it out rather than with what many in the crowd were expecting...an all-star jam! We all thought Buddy was gonna bring them all out one by one until they all finished the night with a bang but it didn't happen that way. BUT it was a cool night none the less. AIR GUITAR HEAVEN!
