The thrill of a lifetime! It's December 13, 1981... MT is currently playing with Alvin Lee (Ten Years After), and I'm enjoying the show while at the same time praying that MT stays here in Kansas City (ugh!) one extra night. The following evening, The Stones are set to play Kemper Arena (for which I've got killer tickets).
The following night, my prayers are answered! After the second or third song, I spot a figure lurking around the side stage on Keef's side. It sure looks like you-know-who, but I can't believe it... I'm thinking it's just a combination of wishful thinking and a near Keef-like intoxication level. But I'll be damned! I see Keef and Mick motioning for this mysterious figure, and HOLY SHIT!!!! It is Mick Taylor!!!!
He straps on his guitar, plugs in, and suddenly it's 1972 again!!! After the song ended (excuse my lack of remembering which tune... I was Keefed!!!!), MT begins to take his guitar off, but the crowd is going totally ape-shit, and the rest of the fellows onstage seem to be coaxing him to stay.
And stay he did!!!! He ended up playing THE ENTIRE SHOW with the guys!!!! I've never enjoyed a concert so much, before or since. And to emphasize how weird this occurrence was, apparently this was THE ONLY TIME this happened. Of all places—Kansas City!!!!!!!!
I'll never forget that evening, even with my Keef-like memory. Believe me, MIRACLES DO HAPPEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
